Since sitting down around a kitchen table in Edinburgh in 2004 to play a few tunes on guitar, fiddle, and squeeze-box, Lau — Martin Green, Kris Drever, and Aiden O’Rourke — have become a bonafide phenomenon: four-time BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners for Best Band (among a shelf-full of other awards), the band is the epicenter of the UK’s folk boom, and is beginning to branch out into the world beyond. A breathtaking performance at Telluride in 2015 gave people on this side of the pond a taste, and plenty more is in the offing. Extraordinary musicians with an intuitive feel for one another’s playing, their boundary-pushing sets are full of re-imagined traditional songs and dazzling originals, all delivered with virtuosic flair.
