Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, a.k.a. the husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope can be as loud as a truck stop full of bikers or as pretty as springtime in their Charleston, SC, home. The band’s name comes from a record they made in 2008, which they note “features several murder ballads where some characters were hanging and others were doing the burying, so the title seemed apt.” The New Yorker has celebrated their “first-rate tunes, from raucous anthems to dark story songs,” and their latest record, Little Seeds, was released in October to continued critical acclaim.
