In 2006, when Nickel Creek announced an indefinite hiatus, frontman (and recent MacArthur winner) Chris Thile began developing material for his debut solo album, How to Grow a Woman from the Ground. The group of players he summoned for the sessions found unexpected chemistry, and the Punch Brothers was born.
