A master of the n’goni, a plucked lute covered with animal skin, the Malian griot Cheick Hamala Diabate illuminates the connections between American and West African roots traditions. Diabate’s explorations have led him to collaborate with the likes of Béla Fleck, Corey Harris, and Bob Carlin — their duo record From Mali to America was Grammy Award-nominated for a Best Traditional World Music Album — and to reunite his beloved instrument with it’s long-lost grandchild, the American banjo, which he wields on stage with exhilarating abandon. Diabate’s new band Mankan continues these musical adventures and adds flourishes of electronic sounds to the mix.
