In the summer of 1978, a month after graduating from high school, Alison Brown took first prize at the Canadian National Banjo Championship, landing her a one-night gig at the Grand Ole Opry. By the time Alison Krauss asked her to join Union Station, in the late 1980s, Brown had an illustrious decade of solo performing behind her. Today she heads the Nashville-based music label Compass Records while performing internationally to a wide-ranging and loyal fan base. Compass is a great partner of FreshGrass and has been integral to the development of the FreshGrass Award and bluegrass workshops. We’re honored to call Alison and Compass members of the FreshGrass family.
For this year’s festival, Brown presents a brilliant group of award-winning bluegrass artists from the Compass Records roster for a one-night-only show: The Compass Bluegrass All Stars. Taking the stage with Brown will be Rob Ickes, Trey Hensley, Frank Solivan, and very special guest, Grand Ole Opry member and living legend, Bobby Osborne. With nearly a decade of combined FreshGrass appearances and enough IBMA awards and Grammys between them to fill a small gallery at MASS MoCA, this bluegrass super-group is sure to deliver an unforgettable set.
