Great Music Uprooted

The FreshGrass Award celebrates and rewards fresh takes on the tradition of bluegrass music. During the festival, while the grassy main stage is bustling with headliners, the country’s finest young artists all converge on our indoor theater as they vie for first place in three categories: Best Band, Best Duo, and Best Banjoist. With prizes summing over $15,000, the FreshGrass Award is proud to be the most ambitious contest of its kind in bluegrass today.

If you are part of a band or duo, or have wicked banjo skills, performing traditional and original songs that are deeply informed by bluegrass even as they test boundaries – we want to hear you.

A distinguished panel of jurists will invite five finalists in each category to participate in the live competition at FreshGrass 2014. Each finalist will have to perform a traditional tune and an original composition written by a member of the band or the individual performing. The winners – selected on the basis of compositional originality, instrumental and vocal skills, and stage presence – will take home an array of prizes, including the opportunity to perform at the following year’s FreshGrass festival, recording sessions at Compass Records, and hand crafted instruments. Submissions open on April 15 and close on August 5. We will announce the finalists by the mid-August. Stay tuned for more details coming soon.
